RENCONTRE
Pink Floyds – Mother
ENCOUNTER
Pink Floyds – Mother
The moon’s body
leaps again at this hour
over the storm of old wars
and drums my sorrow —
never again your shawl
hung on the years of exile
Your shawl, mother…
Mother — look at me
Salah Al Hamdani is a French poet and playwright of Iraqi origin, born in Baghdad in 1951. An opponent of Saddam Hussein’s dictatorship, he left Iraq in 1975 for exile in France, where he has since built a body of work shaped by memory, exile, and the city of his birth. Baghdad, Mon Amour, followed by Baghdad Under the Open Sky (Le Temps des cerises, Paris, 2014), recounts his return to Baghdad on April 2, 2004 — nearly thirty years after his departure — a shattering reunion with a city at once intimate and unrecognizable.
