Charles Spencer Chaplin dit Charlie Chaplin (1889 – 1977), est un acteur célèbre du cinéma muet grâce à son personnage de Charlot, un réalisateur, scénariste, producteur et compositeur britannique. Il connaîtra une brillante carrière aux Etats-Unis avant de connaître une chute de popularité rarement égalée. Différents procès nuiront à sa réputation ; John Edgar Hoover, le – célèbre et premier – directeur du FBI se méfiant des orientations politiques de Chaplin en profitera pour lancer en 1947, dans un contexte de Peur rouge (peur des communistes) une enquête officielle sur les mœurs et opinions politiques de celui-ci. En 1952, son visa sera révoqué et au cas où l’artiste désirerait revenir aux Etat-Unis, il devrait se soumettre à un entretien sur ses opinions politiques et sa moralité. Chaplin rompra tous liens avec ce pays et s’installera en Suisse jusqu’à la fin de ses jours.

Charles Spencer Chaplin, known as Charlie Chaplin (1889 – 1977), is a famous actor in silent cinema thanks to his character of The tramp, a British director, screenwriter, producer and composer. He enjoyed a brilliant career in the United States before experiencing a rarely equalled decline in popularity. Various trials damaged his reputation; John Edgar Hoover, the famous and first FBI director suspicious of Chaplin’s political orientations, took the opportunity to launch in 1947, in a context of Red Fear (fear of the Communists), an official investigation into Chaplin’s political mores and opinions. In 1952, his visa was revoked and in case the artist wished to return to the United States, he would have to undergo an interview on his political opinions and morals. Chaplin broke all ties with this country and settled in Switzerland for the rest of his life.

Indeed, he tried through his films to show aspects of the contemporary world: from the so-called modern world to the dangers of totalitarian regimes of his time. And even when he acted in silent films, we could see features of the society in which we lived at the beginning of the 20th century.
