Nous savons qu’ils mentent…
New Order – True Faith (1987)

We know they are lying…
New Order – True Faith (1987)
« We know that they are lying, they know that they are lying, they even know that we know they are lying, we also know that they know we know they are lying too, but they are still lying. »
This famous quote — “We know they are lying, they know they are lying…” — is most often attributed to Alexander Solzhenitsyn. Yet it does not appear in this exact form anywhere in his writings. Rather, it is a condensed version of his thinking, inspired mainly by The Gulag Archipelago and his brief but radical essay Live Not by Lies.
Solzhenitsyn was not merely describing Soviet repression; he was trying to expose a deeper mechanism: institutionalized falsehood. In a totalitarian system, everyone knows the official narrative is untrue — leaders and citizens alike — yet all continue to behave as if it were real. Power does not primarily seek to persuade; it seeks collective participation in the lie.
The lie then becomes an instrument of domination. State violence serves to protect the regime’s official fiction, while that very fiction is used to justify the violence itself. Gradually, almost imperceptibly, external coercion turns into an internal fracture: living day after day by repeating what one knows to be false eventually distorts one’s relationship to truth itself.
In this context, Solzhenitsyn’s form of resistance — his response to violence and constraint — can seem austere, almost disarmingly simple. He calls neither for revolution nor for the seizure of power, nor even for dramatic opposition. His resistance operates on a far subtler level, at an almost invisible scale. It begins with a refusal to participate in the lie.
Do not write what you know to be false.
Do not repeat what you do not believe.
Do not applaud out of reflex.
At first glance, this stance may seem anything but heroic. And yet everything is there. For Solzhenitsyn, the Soviet system rested largely on falsehood and survived only because ordinary individuals agreed, day after day, to become its conduits.
If this quotation continues to circulate today, it is probably because it reaches far beyond its Soviet context. It reminds us of a simple yet demanding truth: freedom may sometimes begin with a quiet, almost unnoticed gesture — the decision to stop pretending.
Alexander Solzhenitsyn
Alexander Solzhenitsyn (1918–2008) was a Russian writer and dissident, widely regarded as one of the great moral voices of the twentieth century. A Red Army officer during World War II, he was arrested in 1945 for criticizing Stalin in a private letter and spent eight years in the Gulag — an experience that profoundly shaped both his life and his work.
He later gained international recognition by revealing the reality of the Soviet concentration camp system through One Day in the Life of Ivan Denisovich (1962), and above all through The Gulag Archipelago (1973), a monumental investigation that deeply challenged Western perceptions of the USSR and helped discredit the communist system. Awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1970, he was expelled from the Soviet Union in 1974 and lived in exile in Switzerland and later in the United States before returning to Russia in 1994 after the collapse of the Soviet regime.
Admired for his moral courage yet sometimes controversial for his criticism of the West and his conservative views, Solzhenitsyn consistently defended a central conviction: freedom begins with individual responsibility and personal fidelity to truth.
