Singing In The Shower
Quel titre !
Singing in the Shower est un titre volontairement trivial.

Singing In The Shower
Summer of ’85. We weren’t even twenty yet. The windows were wide open, the radio was blasting music way too loud, and the night stretched out ahead of us like a road that would never end, a little like the one Jack Kerouac and his Beat Generation friends had traveled decades before…
…and then that voice, that powerful voice that soared, cracked, laughed, roared, and veered off somewhere else, a voice that seemed never to have asked anyone’s permission to exist, to speak its mind. Poised.
The record had come out the year before, almost in silence, and suddenly « Marcia Baïla » was everywhere: in cars, at parties, in college dorm rooms. It hit us like a thunderclap, the kind of shock that never fades. It took the TV broadcast of its now-legendary video in June for the song to take off and become the hit of the summer of ’85.
All of us! We all danced to that crazy music, sung and played by two wild ones, with Fred beside Catherine: skinny, slanted, guitar slung crosswise, almost looking as if he were apologizing for being a genius. And us? We danced without knowing… without knowing it was a song of mourning, that we were celebrating a woman who had died while we jumped around like mad. But maybe that was the lesson: dance anyway! Dance life, even when death is all around! Dance the summer, dance the winter…
Then came the winter of ’88 and « Singing in the Shower, » Catherine and Sparks’ Russell Mael tossing their voices back and forth in an electric downpour. What a song! Another thunderclap! A different register, but just as powerful and offbeat. It marked the meeting of two families of eccentrics: on one side, the Parisian duo; on the other, the Mael brothers, Ron and Russell, who since the ’70s have made Sparks an unclassifiable pop phenomenon.
« Singing in the Shower » is deliberately trivial, and that is precisely what makes it original: the most intimate, most ordinary place becomes a stage. Off-key or in tune, it doesn’t matter, as long as you sing for yourself, freely. Here again is the lesson the Rita Mitsouko had been teaching since « Marcia Baïla »: lightness is never an escape; it’s a way of standing tall.
Fred went first. She carried on alone, holding their songs the way you carry a lamp down a long hallway. And now she too is gone, one evening in September, taking a part of our youth with her.

It was only a lover’s game
Now we’re trapped in the world of our dreams
All the same as the evenings rain
All the same as the sound of the sea
I wouldn’t worry ’bout it
We’re feelin’ clean
A little crowded as we’re singing
In the shower tonight
See the water and feel the steam
As it’s winding around you and me
Feeling dirty and feeling clean
In the center of our fantasy
We could stay here a million years
Never knowing the world and its games
Red hot water dissolves the fear
Red hot kisses drive us insane
[Chorus]
We could stay here a million years
Never knowing the world and its games
Here we are like a naked choir
In a church that’s completely in flames
Les Rita Mitsouko
A duo formed in Paris in the late ’70s by Catherine Ringer (1957–2026) and Fred Chichin (1954–2007), partners on stage and in life. Emerging from the alternative scene, they released a debut album produced by Conny Plank in 1984, which broke through the following year with « Marcia Baïla. » It was followed by The No Comprendo (1986), which won France’s Victoire for Album of the Year, and Marc et Robert (1988), both produced by Tony Visconti. Blending rock, electronics, punk, and theater, they invented a free-spirited, unclassifiable brand of French pop.
Sparks
An American band founded in Los Angeles by brothers Ron (keyboards, songwriting) and Russell Mael (vocals). They broke through in 1974 with « This Town Ain’t Big Enough for Both of Us, » then reinvented themselves in 1979 with Giorgio Moroder on No. 1 in Heaven, a pioneering electronic pop album. Cult favorites, ironic and endlessly inventive, they wrote the screenplay and music for Leos Carax’s Annette in 2021.
