Cher Mister Fantasy

Dear Mister Fantasy
Dear Mister Fantasy play us a tune
Something to make us all happy
Do anything take us out of this gloom
Sing a song, play guitar
Make it snappy
You are the one who can make us all laugh
But doing that you break out in tears
Please don’t be sad if it was a straight mind you had
We wouldn’t have known you all these years
Uh uh ah
Uh uh ah
Uh uh ah
Uh uh ah
Dear Mister Fantasy play us a tune
Something to make us all happy
Do anything take us out of this gloom
Sing a song, play guitar
Make it snappy, yeah
Dear Mister Fantasy play us a tune
Something to make us all happy
Do anything take us out of this gloom
Sing a song, play guitar
Make it snappy
You are the one who can make us all laugh
But doing that you break out in tears
Please don’t be sad if it was a straight mind you had
We wouldn’t have known you all these years
“Dear Mr. Fantasy” was released in 1967, at the very beginning of Traffic’s journey. The song emerges from an England where rock music is evolving and changing status. Musicians are no longer expected merely to make people dance or help them pass the time; they are given, in a way, a new mission: to accompany an entire generation through its doubts, its breaks, its confused hopes.
By the late 1960s, the stage has become a space of collective projection. Artists carry expectations that go far beyond them: to name the unease, to open exits, to give meaning where the world seems to lack it. Music begins to be perceived as a refuge—sometimes even as an answer.
In this context, Dear Mr. Fantasy is not a light song. It takes the form of an almost desperate plea: play us something, anything, but help us hold on. And Mr. Fantasy is not a real character. He stands for the artist on stage, the one to whom moods, shortcomings, fatigue are entrusted. He carries all those unspoken confidences on his shoulders.
This is where the heart of the song lies: the artist makes others laugh, but he cries in silence. What he gives to the audience—lightness, escape, emotion—comes at an inner cost. It hurts. Yet this pain is not a flaw to be corrected; it is the very source of what he offers. Here, the artist’s fragility is not an accident along the way. It is what makes his voice recognizable, his presence necessary, his art alive. It is precisely because he doubts, wavers, overflows, that he hits the mark.
When the song says, “If it was a straight mind you had, we wouldn’t have known you all these years,” it states an uncomfortable truth. A perfectly stable artist—without cracks, without excess—would never become a figure we truly attach ourselves to.
The audience does not follow the artist despite his fragility, but because of it.
And the song speaks of this without heroism or romanticism: as an almost cold observation, yet a deeply human one. Behind its apparent softness, the song also tells the story of a tacit and unequal pact between artist and audience—the latter feeding on what, in the artist, lays him bare.
TRAFFIC
At the center stands Steve Winwood, barely 19 years old. A former child prodigy of the Spencer Davis Group, he already has hit records behind him, a instantly recognizable voice, and an early weariness with industrial pop. Beside him, Jim Capaldi, 22, drummer and lyricist, brings a more inward, often melancholic writing.
Chris Wood, also 22, flutist and saxophonist, gives the band its airy, pastoral tone—one of its defining signatures. Finally, Dave Mason, 21, guitarist and songwriter, injects a more pop-oriented, psychedelic vein, sometimes in tension with the rest of the group.
Traffic’s formation in 1967—the year of the Summer of Love in the United States—comes at a turning point. Musicians are no longer expected simply to entertain; they are asked to guide a generation searching for meaning. To write and rehearse, the band retreats to a cottage in the countryside, away from London, as if to shield themselves from the noise and bring the music back to its core.
The first album, Mr. Fantasy (1967), immediately lays the groundwork.
It includes “Dear Mr. Fantasy,” an emblematic song that already says it all: the audience asks the musician to lift them out of the gloom, without always measuring the cost to him. For a band whose leader is not yet twenty, the clarity is striking.
Tensions soon appear. Dave Mason comes and goes. The band fragments, then reforms. In 1969, Winwood temporarily leaves for Blind Faith, and Traffic seems to fade away. But it is only a pause.
In 1970, Winwood, Capaldi, and Wood relaunch the band with John Barleycorn Must Die. The music has grown broader, deeper. Success comes largely from the United States. Traffic becomes a key transitional band, bridging the psychedelia of the 1960s and the more expansive, mature rock of the 1970s.
The strength of Traffic lies in this early—almost too early—awareness that creation comes at a price. Very young musicians, already confronted with what music demands when it becomes more than mere entertainment.
