Avec joie donnerais dix mille pièces d’or !
La déclaration « Avec joie donnerais dix mille pièces d’or !

Oh for this one rare occurrence
Gladly would I give ten thousand pieces of gold!
A hat is on my head, a bundle on my back,
And my staff, the refreshing breeze and the full moon.
Poem excerpted from A Buddhist Bible by Dwight Goddard (1932)
These four lines, often quoted by Jack Kerouac, actually come from Dwight Goddard, an early twentieth-century American orientalist and spiritual compiler. They appear in his work A Buddhist Bible (1932), an anthology of Buddhist texts translated and gathered in English. This standalone poem expresses, with both simplicity and strength, the spiritual traveler’s longing to relinquish material wealth and set out on the path of conscious wandering, accompanied only by the essentials: a hat, a bundle, a staff, the fresh breeze, and the light of the moon.
The declaration, “Gladly would I give ten thousand pieces of gold!” conveys the infinitely greater value placed on this moment, on this experience, over any material riches. It serves as a metaphor underscoring that the pilgrim, the wanderer, seeks nothing but this experience of freedom and simplicity—often associated with the Buddhist way.
Dwight Goddard (1879–1941), though little known today, was a pioneer in spreading Buddhism in the West. His major work, A Buddhist Bible, published in 1932, is an ambitious and eclectic compilation of texts drawn from the great Buddhist traditions: Theravāda (Pāli), Mahāyāna (Sanskrit, Chinese, Tibetan sūtras), as well as contemporary commentaries and writings. Goddard did not claim to present a fixed canon but selected passages he believed could inspire inner transformation and awaken spiritual faith.
Goddard’s approach was pragmatic and spiritual, far removed from academic debates; he emphasized the living dimension of Buddhist teaching, highlighting meditative experience, compassion, and the path to liberation. His compilation was among the first to offer English-speaking readers a broad and accessible panorama of Buddhism, influencing figures like Jack Kerouac and the Beat Generation.
The poem itself, with its humble and stripped-down tone, perfectly illustrates this philosophy: the traveler renounces attachment to material goods (“ten thousand pieces of gold”) in favor of essential simplicity, direct contact with nature (“the fresh breeze, the moon”), and the freedom of an unencumbered path.
In sum, this small poem, though isolated, embodies the heart of Goddard’s mission and compilation: a call to simplicity, renunciation, and the pursuit of personal awakening through the Buddhist path—far from complication and artifice.
