En 1953, il publiera le premier ouvrage d’une trilogie à succès consacrée à un truand vieillissant, Max le Menteur. Cette trilogie sera adaptée au cinéma : Touchez pas au grisbi ! (1953), adapté sous le même titre en 1954, Le cave se rebiffe, adapté sous le même titre en 1961 et Grisbi or not grisbi, adapté sous le titre Les Tontons flingueurs en 1963.
