Quand je suis né, j’étais noir,

Quand je mourrai, je serai noir.
Tandis que toi, homme blanc,
Quand tu es né, tu étais rose,
Quand tu as grandi, tu étais blanc,
Quand tu vas au soleil, tu es rouge,
Quand tu as froid, tu es bleu,
Quand tu as peur, tu es vert,
Quand tu es malade, tu es jaune,
Quand tu mourras, tu seras gris.
Alors, de nous deux,
Qui est l’homme de couleur?
Léopold Sédar Senghor (1906-2001) est à la fois un homme politique et un poète né au Sénégal. Après la seconde guerre mondial, son combat pour la décolonisation l’amènera à être le premier président de la République du Sénégal. Avec Aimé Césaire, il est l’un des grand penseur de la négritude (la dignité noire).

So, of the two of us,
Who is the man of colour?
Léopold Sédar Senghor (1906-2001) is both a politician and a poet born in Senegal. After the Second World War, his fight for decolonization led him to become the first President of the Republic of Senegal. With Aimé Césaire, he is one of the great thinkers of negritude (black dignity).
