Thomas Paine (1737 – 1809) in Les droits de l’Homme, 1791, est un intellectuel, pamphlétaire, révolutionnaire britannique, américain et français. Engagé pendant la révolution américaine en faveur de l’indépendance, il exposera ses positions – dans un langage simple accessible au plus grand nombre – ses positions dans son célèbre pamphlet Le sens commun. Ses écrits – et notamment Rights of man (1791) ont également influencé la Révolution française. En 1792, il sera élu député à l’assemblée nationale. Robespierre le fera emprisonner en décembre 1793. A la demande de Thomas Jefferson, il retournera vivre aux aux États-Unis jusqu’en 1809, date de sa mort.

His writings – and notably Rights of man (1791) – also influenced the French Revolution. In 1792, he was elected deputy to the National Assembly. Robespierre had him imprisoned in December 1793. At the request of Thomas Jefferson, he returned to live in the United States until 1809, when he died.
